Alrighty then!

Here are my thoughts about Dead By Sunrise – Out Of Ashes.

Beforehand I’m letting you know that I’m not going to be all „Oh, it’s Chaz, OF COURSE IT’S 100% AWESOME!!!“ ...because it’s not. At least in my opinion.

1.) Fire 9/10

I think it’s a nice start off and there’s certainly a desire to hear more of the album. I simply love the riff throughout the song and the lyrics. To me it seems like he’s talking to a loving person who passed away (“When I look to the stars I know just where you are, you’re looking down upon me on the other side” ). It’s about a deep connection without having to touch or kiss and still feeling each other being close somehow. Kickass song with sweet lyrics.

2.) Crawl Back In 6/10

It didn’t knock me off my socks in the first place to be honest. Plus the video is beyond weird. The song seems like any other rocksong to me. Nod bad, not exactly thrilling either. The only thing I really like about it is the guitar solo.

3.) Too Late: 9/10

C’s voice is unbelievably soft in this one and the melody is simply stunning. It’s slow, yet anything but boring. Beautiful.

4.) Inside of me 8/10

It’s short, but powerful. It reminds me of a mixture between “Hit The Floor” and “Given Up”. Plus there’s a lot of “UuooooOOOoooo” going on in the chorus which makes it almost sound like a party song.

5.) Let down 7/10

I always thought it was sort of boring when I listened to the acoustic live version (and the high-pitched “aahhhhaahhh” part was awful xD), but the studio version is so much better!! This is definitely a song about his divorce which makes it all the more sad. *sighs and waves a litte Chaz&Sam flag* They were so cute together…

6.) Give me your name 5/10

Strangely enough the intro reminds me of a Guns’n’Roses song, but I can’t really put my finger on it. C’s voice is oddly high-pitched and uber-soft during the entire song. Except for the chorus…where he pushes it even higher (Hello Mika? ). The lyrics are as cheesy as I imagined, but I can’t get rid of the feeling that I might’ve liked it a lot more if a certain someone hadn’t been SO IN YOUR FACE with it. Ahem. Anyway, it’s more or less like a stereotypical lovesong and not very exciting. The acoustic ending is nice, though.

7.) My Suffering 10/10

One of my favorites! Actually everything’s just perfect: Melody, rhythm, lyrics, voice. BAM! Brilliant.

8.) Condemned 7/10

I feel bad that I had to laugh at the way he sings/grunts/yells the lines since it’s “the darkest” song on the album according to him. I think it’s involuntarily funny. It’s like “Okay, I twist my voice like that and bend over like this to make my voice sound like I’m about to retch, because that makes me sound really pissed and soooo angry. Ooooh!” I like the chorus, though. It’s not as bad as the rest. Plus screaming at the end. Missed this.

9.) Into You 4/10

Downright boring. That’s probably all I can say about this one. It doesn’t tickle me in the slightest.

10.) End of the World 6/10

Ooof. Okay, this one doesn’t really fit the rest of the album imho. It’s all about social criticism. He’s talking about the daily news consisting of sex, murder, corrupt politics and so on. Somehow it reminds me of a Grey Daze song…
It’s okay, but hmm…let’s just say the bell’s play in between a few lines is kinda cool. xD

11.) Walking in Circles 10/10

A suprisingly light melody in the beginning with only a sad undertone until the drama increases and climaxes in the chorus. The lyrics make me think of a person walking through a crowd of zombie-like people staring into nothingness. It definitely has an eery note to it. In my opinion it’s the best song on the album. Best melodies & lyrics. Plus I love the increasing dramatic sound up to the end. Awesometastic!

12.) In the Darkness 6/10

And here we go. This is without a doubt a song about doing naughty stuff at night. Unfortunately it’s sort of emo-ish instead of being sexy which disappoints me. The ‘beatboxing’ (Ryan?) sounds a little weird and could as well have been left out. There is a sort of pain vs. pleasure situation going on and the chorus has a dramatic ring to it.
The sound effects at the end (like ripping paper) are interesting, too.

13.) The Morning After 8/10

I was surprised not hearing the Julien-K remix, but a different studio version. It’s more of a rock song since they left out the annoying techno-beats. Nice.

Conclusion:
Since I almost knew 50% of the songs before having listened to the whole album, the surprise effect was pretty low. Which is a sad thing. All in all, I think the album is quite ok, but if it wasn't Chaz I probably wouldn't have bought it. Yes, that's the fangirl in me talking. ;D

I'm excited to know what you guys think about it.
